We want to send our condolences to our friend and We want to send our condolences to our friend and neighbor Eddie Gordon and his brother Todd on the death of their mother Betty Gordon at the age of 97 last week. These photos were taken at their farm @gordonskagitfarms back in 2008 & 2009. Katherine demonstrated basketry there for the opening October weekends two or three times. The first photo shows Betty coming out to check out the activity. Second photo shows Eddie taking a brief moment to visit. The third is one of my favorite photos of Katherine working.
The Gordon’s farm is a must visit in October if you come up to the Skagit Valley. They have a spectacular display of pumpkins, squash, flowers and art. Eddie has been a friend since he started buying vegetables from me back in the day. There were many Sundays when he would drop by for produce and we would spend a few minutes chatting. Often his phone would ring and it would be Betty. I know how committed he was to his mother’s health for many years.

The willows are starting to grow rapidly now that The willows are starting to grow rapidly now that we had some warm weather. It’s fun to see the many different colors especially the vibrant tips. There is one row of new cuttings just sending out their first shoots with a line of drip tape to keep them moist. Still plenty of weeds to cut and pull as well. You can see Tiger pretending to help in the last photo.

Four photos of a male Downy Woodpecker in two diff Four photos of a male Downy Woodpecker in two different willows. First he is in a Salix daphnoides Le Bleu, then a Salix x fragilis Fransgeel Rood. In case you’re wondering he is not really foraging on these willows but coming in to a nearby suet feeder. Obviously these willows are a couple years old. I like having many of the willows as older plants to appreciate all of their characteristics. So does DW.

Bushtits making a nest on a hanging blackberry vin Bushtits making a nest on a hanging blackberry vine. The first photo is the female entering the nest with a mouthful of nest material and the second is her exiting. The third photo is the male Bushtit coming to the nest with a mouthful of nesting material. The nests are made from spider webs, moss, lichens and even willow catkins. Hopefully this nest site works out although it seem to be in an open area.
