We had sun and cold temperatures last week which m We had sun and cold temperatures last week which made for some pretty willow in the field. First two photos are taken from a ladder. Some varieties are still hanging on to leaves though most have fallen. No rush to harvest here.

They feed on apples that other birds have opened up. 3) Steller’s Jay in a willow structure. 4) Bushtit finding some aphids on a willow. 5) Barred Owl at dusk. 6) Barred Owl during the daytime.

The willow leaves are slowing turning mostly yello The willow leaves are slowing turning mostly yellow and dropping revealing the colorful rods. The leaves aren’t the ‘showiest’ but a willow coppice is quite beautiful especially with a mix of varieties.

This American Tree Sparrow stopped by the farm not This American Tree Sparrow stopped by the farm not long ago. Although it is a common winter bird in much of the country it is rare here on the west coast. Despite the name they spend much of their time foraging down on the ground. This one seen briefly perched on a Salix daphnoides rod in one of my weedy willow patches.

Barn Owl photos from a few years back. They use to be an occasional visitor to our barn though it’s a little too small for them to be comfortable roosting there.

Downy Woodpeckers are a small woodpecker that are Downy Woodpeckers are a small woodpecker that are year round residents in our area. I managed to get a photo of a female near my rain gauge (photos 1 & 2). I also noticed two females acting aggressively toward each other last week (photos 3 & 4). They circled around the top of the old light pole in the yard lunging at each other and fanning their feathers. If you look at the photos, you’ll notice differences between the two as apparently there are several subspecies of Downy Woodpecker in Washington.

I was surprised to see these giant willow bark aph I was surprised to see these giant willow bark aphids yesterday. Though perhaps I should be surprised that I haven’t seen more considering how dry it’s been. The first two photos are from a coppiced Salix purpurea plant on the end of a row. There were a few rods that had some clusters of aphids. Then I went looking around various willows and only found one cluster of some that looked a bit older on an unpruned Salix acutifolia shown in the third photo. Always something fascinating to observe in the willows.
