Several photos of some of the willows on the farm. First two were taken from an orchard ladder for some height. You can see the mix of varieties changing leaf color. It’s a great time of year to see the stem colors slowly revealed as the leaves drop. In our climate fall tends to be a long stretch and there is no rush to start cutting.
Once the stems go bare next month I will have a closer assessment on what there is. We had a very dry summer this year so the yield may be less. There is also a bit more weed pressure and not a complete coppice last spring due to health. Fortunately I should be through cancer treatment soon and back at it in January. For now the beauty and resilience of the willows is a good inspiration.
I will be selling willow cuttings this spring. I will start taking orders January 1. There is plenty of info on our website. It’s a bit “text” heavy so not for everyone. Our minimum order is higher than most. It allows me to service fewer customers with larger orders at a reasonable price. You are welcome to email questions. I also appreciate feedback from customers about previous plantings.

We went to the “meet the artists” event at the Lynnwood Event Center yesterday evening. Pacific Northwest Perspectives is an exhibit of work by members of Northwest Designer Craftartists up through December 12. Katherine has a large Irish potato basket that she titled “Skagit Sunset” for the exhibit. Nice event with live music, good food and a good turnout of local people as well as the artists. It’s a large event center so it’s a bit of a challenge for artists to have their work standout hanging from the large walls. The short video clip shows the work near Katherine’s with art by Nancy Loorem Adams, Steve Jensen, Denise Snyder, Katherine Lewis, Noble Golden and Gabriela Nirino. There is artwork by 25 artists in a wide variety of mediums in the exhibit . Find out more about NWDC at nwdesignercraftartists.org.

It’s state fair time around the country. Even the Renwick Gallery in Washington is having an exhibit about the impact of state fairs on craft. Katherine was awarded the “Grand Champion” ribbon for basketry three times at the Washington State Fair also known as the Puyallup Fair for many years.
The first year she entered in 2009 she won for a rope coil weave bowl that we called Nana Queen. Willow growers might be able to guess the reason for that name. First photo shows the basket with the ribbons on top of a buff willow trunk she made back then and the second photo just the basket. Katherine has always put a lot of effort into the sorting of the willows for the rope coils to create a lovely center table type basket.
In 2010 Katherine entered a large basket featuring a colorful zig zag side weave. This basket was originally made for a local art exhibit called “Paint me a river! Art meets history”. We called this one “Harvesting the Skagit”. The form was loosely based on traditional tulip bulb harvest baskets that were used in the area many years ago. The colorful zig zag alluding to the river and landscape. So this basket in particular fit in nicely with the state fair atmosphere. Photo four shows Katherine weaving this one.
The last year she entered was 2016 and she won for a long rectangular tray. Beautiful basket but difficult to photo for this format. She hasn’t entered in recent years mostly because of the logistics of getting a basket to the fair and back. It was fun to at least know that thousands of people might have had a look at all the baskets. Whether it’s the local county fair or the state fair they are fun events to see these ”home arts” exhibits.

Katherine is headed to Minneapolis next week with

Katherine is headed to Minneapolis next week with her friend Maria Bullock @swamp.sticks to teach a willow bark weaving class. Katherine has been busy cutting all of the bark needed for the two projects - a mad weave tray and a windmill weave card holder. Samples are shown in photos 4 and 5.
Katherine and Maria decided to travel there to take a class with Hege Aasdal from Norway to make a Norwegian vedmeis basket from split willow. She is teaching a couple of classes in Wisconsin. The willow bark classes they are teaching are a fun way to connect with basketmakers in the Minneapolis area and offset some of the travel cost.

The willow pole bean trellis is always a good spot to see some birds especially the Anna’s Hummingbirds that use it both as a place to perch and to feed. First photo is a Willow Flycatcher (doesn’t every willow grower have them?). Second photo is an Orange-crowned Warbler. Both of them are insect eaters. The other photos are Anna’s Hummingbirds.

Peek a boo! Always fun to see, or often just hear, Common Yellowthroat warblers in the willows. One of the insects they might be eating are the slug sawflies that window pane feed on the leaves which then turn brown. That’s the great thing about willows. So many insects for the birds.

Some throwback photos to Katherine’s willow class at the National Basketry Organization conference in 2017 in Tacoma, WA. Two years ago Katherine organized for the conference tour group. This year she will be back at the conference working in an administrative capacity helping out director Pam Morton since administrative manager Joan Ciolino can’t make it this time. Katherine is looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
