Slowly we’re getting through the willow harvest an Slowly we’re getting through the willow harvest and making cuttings to ship out. We had a few nice spring like days and I was lucky to have Katherine helping me in the field. I am running behind on the cuttings orders and appreciate people’s patience. Putting my new “Wonders of Willow” mug to work thi Putting my new “Wonders of Willow” mug to work this week while making cuttings for orders. Thanks to Erin @fieldandforestcrafts for inviting me to give a presentation at the wonderful event she organized last weekend at the impressive @sky_nursery. Katherine and I had a great time though we forgot to take any photos so I can’t even show you what I looked like in action. I appreciated Erin’s partner Christopher for setting up the audio visuals. He is quite the gardener as well @seattlegardener. It was fun to meet Zak @salixsolutions who is a good contact for anyone working with native willows in the northwest. Finally met Alana and Michael from @willamette.willows in person and traded a few cuttings. Another good source for willow cuttings in the Pacific Northwest. Nice to see other cuttings customers at the event doing some teaching or networking like Melissa @oysterbayfarm, Shannon @whatcomwillowworks, Kaisha @hedgerow_willows and Radha @marrowstone_willow. I checked out the @agroforestrynorthwest table as well though Carrie didn’t seem to know who I was even though she has been to my farm three times to pick up cuttings for her farm clients. One of them was at my talk Diane Bell who is growing willow @rootednwagrivillage. Also briefly met David and June from Sandy, Oregon who are growers and weavers of willow @junebug_jacobson. I’m back to our willows that you can see in the video clip making cuttings to ship out. Meanwhile out in the field early bloomers like Stewartstown are starting to open. Where’s Steve? He is getting pulled out of the fie Where’s Steve? He is getting pulled out of the field to give a presentation on his experience growing willow for Katherine’s baskets this Sunday at noon at Sky Nursery in Seattle as part of the Wonders of Willow event. Katherine is coming too and we will have some of her baskets along as well. Hopefully Steve’s voice will hold up for the talk since it’s been so raspy after all the radiation treatments last year. Flashback to 2018 when the traveling exhibit Roote Flashback to 2018 when the traveling exhibit Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America came to the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, WA. Katherine was included in the “living traditions” section of this outstanding exhibit curated by Jo Stealey and Kristin Schwain of the University of Missouri in partnership with the National Basketry Organization. The first two photos show the rope coil weave basket that Katherine made for the exhibit. The basket next to Katherine’s is one by JoAnn Kelly Catsos. The third image is a short video clip of Katherine explaining her work during a gallery tour led by co-curator Jo Stealey. The exhibit was at the Whatcom Museum from February 3 - May 6, 2018. Along with the exhibit there was also a show of works by members of the Northwest Basket Weavers Guild that was juried by Katherine and Lisa Telford. Katherine had three of her baskets on display as well. The Northwest Basket Weavers Guild Spring Retreat The Northwest Basket Weavers Guild Spring Retreat class brochure will be posted on Monday January 19. Katherine will be teaching two willow classes at the event May 13-17. She is also donating this willow bark tray for the annual basket raffle at the retreat. Making some new willow variety labels for the fiel Making some new willow variety labels for the field. These are most of the varieties we have in the garden that we’re actively coppicing. There are a few more in some older plantings that I’m going to label soon before I lose their id. Second photo is just a reminder about the willow event that Erin @fieldandforestcrafts is organizing at Sky Nursery in north Seattle February 14&15. There will be several presentations as well as several vendors selling willows. I will be there on Sunday the 15th to talk about my experience growing willows so I will be talking a bit about the varieties I have tried over the years. There are some short hands on classes but they are almost all full already. Finally to those who have ordered cuttings from me I will be getting invoices out to everyone soon. Thank you for your patience. I recently had a potential customer email that I was rude for not responding quicker. Just a reminder that I am taking willow cuttings o Just a reminder that I am taking willow cuttings orders now. The willows look like that nice Green Dicks in the first photo right now. Hopefully I will be harvesting many bundles soon and turning the larger rods into cuttings like in the second photo. All of the details are on our website on the willow cuttings page. The website takes a little concentration to get through the text, but please make an effort if you are interested in our cuttings. Minimum order is 100 cuttings. USA only. Katherine was honored to be a featured artist in t Katherine was honored to be a featured artist in the latest National Basketry Organization magazine basketry+. As most people will know, you have to provide the images for articles so hopefully they represented Katherine’s work well. I’ve posted photos here of the two page spreads in 1 to 3; then the title page with Katherine’s rope coil baskets; next the cover of the issue with Carol Eckert’s beautiful work; next are 3 photos that were submitted but not used; finally two photos that were slightly cropped in the magazine including one of my favorite portraits of Katherine. Katherine is someone who identifies more as a crafts person than an artist so it’s always interesting being interviewed by someone that’s not familiar with her medium. Happy Winter Solstice! This time of year we can en Happy Winter Solstice! This time of year we can enjoy the colorful bare stems of the willows and spot all of the small birds foraging and perching on the rods.
