What’s that blob in the willow? It’s a Hoary B What’s that blob in the willow? It’s a Hoary Bat. A few days ago I noticed several Black-capped Chickadees “mobbing” something in a large willow tree. I noticed this bat roosting in the outer limbs about 12 feet high. I took the first photo standing on a ladder. The second photo is looking up from underneath which I didn’t manage to get a clear image of the face. I have never seen a Hoary bat on the farm, but the white color in the fur and the size made the id easy. Also they are known to roost in tree foliage 10-16 feet above the ground. The third photo is an older photo taken in one of our barns of the smaller bats we usually see. It’s always fun to see Katherine’s baskets sho It’s always fun to see Katherine’s baskets show up on Carol Eckert’s blog contemporarybasketry.blogspot.com. Last week these magazine baskets appeared on a post titled trios. I added a couple more photos that I found stored in a folder from April 2009. Having to grow your own willow here in the USA has always inspired Katherine to explore the beautiful colors of willow. I noticed the hyperlink had my name because the photo was from my Flickr.com account. I don’t upload basket photos to Flickr now (mostly birds) but there are lots of photos of baskets Katherine made 10-15 years ago there. These three willow bark “baskets” were dropped These three willow bark “baskets” were dropped off at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum in La Conner, WA today for their upcoming fiber arts festival in Everett,WA October 4-6, 2024. Left to right: Treasure Box, Willow Bark Purse and Take Out. Katherine made the first two in the past few months and the third is a “covid” piece with a little humor. Treasure Box and Take Out are entered in the 3-D/Sculptural category and the Purse is in the Wearable Art category. The exhibit is a great show for quilts but has been expanding the range of fiber arts in recent years. I included photos of the purse and the take out box open just so you could see the inside. Several large baskets that Katherine recently made Several large baskets that Katherine recently made. These are sturdy and beautiful baskets for the home. Some of the willows might be of interest to basketmakers here in the US growing their own. In the first photo the top left is Americana with Packing Twine, the top middle is Dicky Meadows with Bear Creek Red, the side weavers on the right top and lower left are Vermont Red which is almost black in color, the bottom right has Jaune de Falaise for the side weavers which has a pretty reddish brown color despite being quite yellow when growing. The second photo shows some more red and green combinations with a green purpurea (maybe Green Dicks) and the red is again a Salix eriocephala we call Bear Creek Red.. . #willowbaskets #willowbasketmaker #katherinelewis #dunbargardens #farmtobasket #skagitvalley #basketsmadetobeused #basketry #willowweaving #nbomember
Some recent birds on the farm photos. 1) Great Hor Some recent birds on the farm photos. 1) Great Horned Owl perched in an old willow. 2) Orange-crowned Warbler peeking at me while eating sawfly larvae off the willow leaves. 3) Anna’s Hummingbird feeding on the pole bean flowers. 4) Bushtit foraging in the willows. 5) Northern Flicker perched in a willow. 6) Downy Woodpecker mom feeding her young. 7) A young Common Yellowthroat hunting for insects in the sunflowers. 8) Red-breasted Nuthatch on top of an old light pole. 9) Raven and Crow having an altercation. There were two families going at it. 10) Turkey Vulture flying over to clean up any fatalities. . #birdsonthefarm #dunbargardens #skagitvalley

Katherine’s entry in the National Basketry Organ Katherine’s entry in the National Basketry Organization’s “Every 1 2024” members exhibition online now through the end of the year. This multi color rope coil weave shows off the varied colors of several of the willows we grow on the farm. Katherine enjoys the symmetrical bowl like shape and transitioning from one willow to the next. This is a virtual exhibit so this basket is actually in a customer’s home. Katherine has made a lot of rope coil weave baskets over the years. She first learned this technique from basketmaker Lise Bech in Scotland 20 years ago.
