Katherine will be at the Anacortes Arts Festival t Katherine will be at the Anacortes Arts Festival this Friday, Sat & Sun from 10-4 in the “Working Studios” area. She will be doing a demo of willow basketry and will have a few baskets for sale as well. Second photo is from a few years back at the festival. This year she has invited some other members of the Northwest Basket Weavers Guild to come demo their work as well; hoping it can become an outreach event for the guild in the future.

Willow bark with black ash. 28cm length x 22cm wid Willow bark with black ash. 28cm length x 22cm width x 32cm height. Katherine had purchased some black ash splints from a materials sale after the death of the local basketry guild’s founder several years back. They paired nicely with willow bark.

Some of Katherine’s baskets showing off a range Some of Katherine’s baskets showing off a range of colors in the sun while I was doing a little cleaning in the barn. Fortunately sold three of these last week. Two went to repeat customers. Always nice to have people contact us several years later for another one. The baskets last a lifetime so it has to be a new use or another gift.

An old friend headed to a new home today. Katherin An old friend headed to a new home today. Katherine made this basket back in 2015 for the National Basketry Organization’s “All Things Considered VIII” exhibit. Photo 3 is a snap of the basket in the exhibit catalog. This one has been sitting on our website for years waiting for someone. Katherine originally named this one ‘Moon 2’. It’s a good size unique table tray.

Prototype for Katherine’s new line of willow bar Prototype for Katherine’s new line of willow bark shoes. 🤔 Actually it’s an art piece she made for an upcoming show called ‘Fantasy Footwear’ for the group Northwest Designer Craftsmen. Katherine’s shoe is made from willow bark, willow bark cordage and some rivets. Each piece had to be under 10 inches in any dimension.
The exhibit is at Art + Artifacts gallery on Mercer Island August 6-September 30. Members have made shoes in ceramics, glass, fiber, metal, wood and mixed media.

One of my favorite birds on the farm is the White- One of my favorite birds on the farm is the White-crowned Sparrow. They nest on or near the ground and can be found in the willows. The young leave the nest early but cannot fly for a week or so. The willows are a nice cover for them. In the second photo the adult has a larva of some sort probably picked off a willow.
