Working on willow cuttings orders now. Nice to get Working on willow cuttings orders now. Nice to get a couple thousand out the door in the past ten days. I am a little behind this year with the recent cold weather. I have been selling cuttings mail order for 16 years now.
This year I’m using two gallon ziploc freezer bags to pack the cuttings. It’s difficult to find an alternative to a plastic bag to retain moisture when shipping cuttings. I thought these bags would at least be useful for the customer for something else.
The second photo shows a light dusting of snow on the willow bundles stacked against the barn.

I made this willow heart from small Blue Streak st I made this willow heart from small Blue Streak stems on Valentine’s Day. Swipe to see how it now has pruinose stems. This white bloom is often seen on Salix acutifolia, Salix daphnoides and Salix irrorata (perhaps others that I’m not growing as well). And yes as you can see by my feeble weaving attempt I leave all of the basketry to Katherine.

Anyone participating in the #greatbackyardbirdcoun Anyone participating in the #greatbackyardbirdcount this past weekend? 1) This Sharp-shinned Hawk flew in to ‘catch’ some of the action. 2) Black-capped Chickadee perched on a Continental Purple willow. 3) Black-capped Chickadee on a Green Dicks willow rod. If you look close you can see the stem gall that it’s interested in. 4) White-throated Sparrow in a Black Pussy willow. 5) Northern Flicker in a Fransgeel Rood. 6) Downy Woodpecker on the same willow. Hint it’s near a suet feeder. 7) Anna’s Hummingbird male perched on an apple branch.

Katherine created this willow artwork back in 2010 Katherine created this willow artwork back in 2010 for a fundraiser at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, WA. For several years they had a spring pop up market called MoNA Style featuring clothing, jewelry and home accessories. In 2010 there was also an auction with the theme “Lingerie”. So this was Katherine’s “willow lingerie” made from several varieties of willow and willow bark for the skirt. The piece was purchased by a local person. It’s a shame it wasn’t on public display for more than a few hours, but we’re lucky to have a few photos.
